The Cross-Platform Challenge
HB Products faced a limiting factor in their digital toolkit: a Windows-only UWP application that connected to their advanced sensor systems. While functional, the application’s platform restrictions and outdated interface were increasingly at odds with the company’s forward-thinking approach.
They acknowledged that while their sensors represent cutting-edge technology, their software interface needed a boost. The company was determined to find a solution that would function smoothly across all devices used by their customers, whether in the field on mobile devices or at their desks.
The challenge wasn’t just about expanding platform availability. The application’s core functionality, real-time sensor data collection and visualization, required precision and reliability that couldn’t be compromised during a transition.
Flutter in Action
Our approach was to migrate the application to Flutter, Google’s UI toolkit for building natively compiled applications across mobile, web, and desktop from a single codebase. This strategic choice enabled us to deliver on HB Products’ multi-platform requirements while maintaining performance.
The migration process was highly collaborative. Our team worked hand-in-hand with HB Products’ original UWP developer and the engineers responsible for the sensor hardware. This collaboration ensured we fully understood the technical complexities of sensor communication and data visualization requirements.
A significant hurdle emerged when we identified bugs in the original Bluetooth connectivity library, a crucial component for sensor communication on Windows. Rather than working around these issues, our development team dug into the native C++ code, successfully resolving the bugs and ensuring stable connectivity across all platforms.
Meanwhile, our design team reimagined the user interface, creating an intuitive, responsive experience that reflected HB Products’ innovative brand identity while making complex sensor data more accessible and actionable for users.
Three Platforms, One Seamless Experience
The result was an achievement in cross-platform development, a single cohesive application deployed across Android, iOS, and Windows platforms. The new application maintained all the technical capabilities of the original while significantly enhancing the user experience.
Real-time data visualization, critical for HB Products’ customers, received particular attention, with performance optimizations ensuring smooth rendering even with complex sensor data streams.
The HB Products team noted that the new application perfectly aligned with the company’s philosophy of delivering tomorrow’s technology today. They emphasized that their digital presence now matched the innovation behind their physical products.
