About Joint Arctic Command

The mission of the Joint Arctic Command is to protect the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark in the Arctic Region, which includes Maritime Pollution Prevention, fishery inspection, Search and Rescue, hydrographical surveys and support to governmental science missions, and civil society.

The Problem

Joint Arctic Command was tasked with creating a new mobile app for a volunteer organization, Grønlandsvogterne, to make it easy for volunteers in Greenland to report pollution at sea, people in need of rescue, as well as military activity observations.

Due to no prior experience with creating mobile apps, Joint Arctic Command needed a software development company that could guide them through the process from start to finish and provide a turnkey solution with iOS and Android apps ready for volunteers to download.

The Solution

Manao Software interviewed stakeholders to gain clear understanding of the requirements for the mobile app.
The app needed to be designed for special circumstances, e.g., intermittent or unavailable internet connection, situations where users are wearing gloves or have limited time to interact with the app.

We designed a simple, graphic user interface with big, easy to hit buttons, which can be operated quickly in emergencies or with reduced finger dexterity. In order to deal with an unreliable internet connection, we implemented an offline mode for the app. That makes it possible for a user to create a report (including photos, GPS location, and description) while the internet connection is unavailable. The app submits the report as soon as the internet connection is steady. Reports submitted by volunteers are received at the office of Joint Arctic Command where they can be triaged and actioned.

Through great collaboration with Manao Software, Grønlandsvogterne App has produced a final product in mobile app development.

“Manao guided us safely through the process of developing the Grønlandsvogterne application. Our wishes and requirements for the application were converted to the final product through a great collaboration, during which we received support and guidance in numerous ways on the path towards the resulting application. We look forward to continuing the development of the application Grønlandsvogterne.”

The Results

The Grønlandsvogterne app successfully launched on May 27th, 2021. Five days later, the app had already been downloaded over 500 times. In that short amount of time, several reports were submitted, e.g., a stray fishing net near Nuuk. The net was drifting in the sea with buoys and dead birds stuck in it. After receiving the report, the net was collected to avoid further damage to animals or vessels.
